Urbanna Pool won’t open for 2023 season

The proposed new Urbanna community swimming pool will not be open for the 2023 season, it was reported at the March 23 Urbanna Town Council meeting.

The Urbanna Pool Committee recommended the town council delay construction after a bid received last week was for nearly $1.5 million with the site work being a large part of the cost, said Urbanna Mayor Bill Goldsmith, who added the actual pool cost is $460,000, which doesn’t include the decking around it.

Pool Committee Chairman Barbara Hartley presented to council the committee’s recommendation to delay construction. “Construction costs have also soared in the time that we have been negotiating this,” said Hartley. “But we are now being advised that they will soon be coming back down, I don’t know by how much, or how this will impact us, but they may work to our advantage.”

Hartley said the delay will give more time to raise funds to cover the shortfall in planned funding sources that the town has identified…
