Traffic snarls related to a serious crash backed up vehicles for nearly an hour and half at the intersection of General Puller Highway (Route 33) and Greys Point Road (Route 3) at Harmony Village Monday, between 8:20 and 10 a.m., following a two-vehicle collision near the traffic light at Harmony Grove Baptist Church.
Traffic was stalled on Route 3 to the Robert O. Norris Jr. Bridge at the Rappahannock River and halfway to Deltaville on Route 33 before crash victims and wrecked vehicles could be removed so traffic could flow.
Virginia State Trooper Will Krom, who responded to the crash, said that an eastbound van driven by William C. Jarrell of Shacklefords was turning left off Route 33 towards Route 3 and pulled into the path of a Chevrolet Cruze sedan that was westbound on Route 33. The sedan was driven by Kellie McQuillen of Hardyville, who was transporting two children.
The collision caused the van to overturn, however the driver appeared to not be seriously injured and was not transported, said Trooper W. Krom.
McQuillen was airlifted by helicopter to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, where she was treated and released the same day, said Trooper W. Krom. The helicopter landed in a field across from Harmony Grove Baptist Church 17 minutes after being called.
The two children were transported by ambulance to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester and were treated and released the same day, said Trooper W. Krom.
All occupants of the Chevrolet Cruze were wearing seat belts, and the van driver was not wearing a seat belt, said Trooper W. Krom, who added Jarrell has been charged with failing to yield right of way.
Team effort
Patients were transported by the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad and the Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad (MCVRS)-Deltaville.
The Hartfield Volunteer Fire Department (HVFD) also responded and brought several Middlesex High School firefighter trainees, who are enrolled in the Deltaville-Hartfield Basic Fire School. They assisted the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office in directing traffic.
Along with the HVFD, Urbanna-based Middlesex County Volunteer Fire Department sent a truck and firefighters to the scene…
