MHS Advanced Band judged as “Superior”

The Middlesex High School (MHS) Advanced Band performed at the Middle Peninsula-Northern Neck area assessment on March 2 at West Point High School “with outstanding results,” said MHS Band Director Doug Armstrong. The band received the highest ratings possible, “superior,” from each of the four judges.

The students performed a challenging program of Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association (VBODA) literature, followed by “sight-reading” a VBODA Grade II selection, Armstrong said. “Performing at this level is a huge challenge, but it is an attainable goal for our students,” said Armstrong. “They are smart, they are very capable, and they deserved the opportunity to demonstrate that they can perform and succeed at such a high level. And succeed they did!”

The band has been working methodically and diligently to prepare for this assessment throughout this school year, said Armstrong. “I selected music at the Grade IV (4) level for the stage performance, which is the level typically performed in the fourth or fifth year…”
