“Lee” Weber played dynamic role in MC

Middlesex County has had many women who have played a dynamic role in improving quality of life in the county. One of the most dynamic county public servants was Lenora Ozella Monk “Lee” Weber.

Weber lived in Topping and in 1991 was the first woman in the history of Middlesex County to be elected to the 120-year-old county board of supervisors.

Although small in stature, Weber was known as an aggressive and competent supervisor who voted her own mind and stood her ground against all odds. She was a voice for governmental equity and justice which often infuriated several longtime white male supervisors who felt their districts deserved special treatment.

Weber served on the board for 13 years for three consecutive terms and as chairman for a number of years. She died in office Sept. 9, 2005, after she lost her courageous battle with cancer.

She is buried in the Middlesex Memorial Cemetery near Urbanna and embossed on her tombstone is “WEBER, Lenora ‘Lee’ December 10, 1935-September 9, 2005. First Woman Elected to Middlesex County Board of Supervisors.”
