Urbanna Cat Project members met last week to do some brainstorming to come up with solutions to concerns by a marina owner who said cats have damaged customers’ boats.
At the March 9 council meeting, boatyard manager Jimmy Pickett told council that two cats had litters of kittens on two different boats last summer, and cats have also sprayed on boats. “They are a problem in the boatyard,” said Pickett who added cats have scratched his truck.
He estimated there are 50 feral cats that are being fed in three areas around the boatyard. “We’re in the triangle.”
On Friday, March 10, members of the Urbanna Cat Project (UPC) met at the town hall. As the meeting settled down, the group developed a list of ideas that would help the UCP, which has expressed a desire to help control the cats at the marina. The group plans to seek the Anderson’s permission to enter the marina property to trap feral cats.
During discussion it was suggested that if there were more shelters for the cats near the marina, they might not go on the boats.
Bury and Wheeler said they would set up a meeting with the Andersons and UCP members.
