Oakley scores 20 points to lead MHS in its season-ending defeat in Lynchburg
The Middlesex High School (MHS) varsity basketball season came to an end Friday as the Altavista Colonels (21-4) ran away with the Class I state quarterfinal game, 78-57.
The Chargers (23-4) ran into the same problem they ran into with the powerful Middlesex-nemesis Lancaster Red Devils, the only other team to defeat Middlesex this season.
Lancaster beat Middlesex three times.
Altavista’s 3-point shooting neutralized the Chargers advantages under the boards, the same formula used by the Red Devils. If you can hit 3-pointers there are no offensive stops and no rebounds! The Colonels hit 10 of 18 3-pointers in the first half and were 12 for 26 in the game.
When Middlesex has lost games in this season, senior center Montrell Oakley has had to pick up the offensive and defensive play under the boards and he has always risen to the occasion. Oakley scored 20 points to lead all Charger scorers.
The Chargers did pull within 66-51 in the fourth quarter, but Altavista was able to stop any further advances by the Chargers.
The Chargers ended the season with a 23-4 win-loss record and a 13-0 Tidewater District record. MHS was regular season and tournament Tidewater District champions.
