Middlesex Chargers hope to demote Altavista Colonels; only three wins away from state crown

The Middlesex High School (MHS) varsity boys basketball team (23-3, 13-0) fell in the finals of the Region A tournament Friday, 64-50, to an undefeated Lancaster High School (LHS) — making Middlesex the region runner-up.

As region runner-up, the Chargers qualified for the State 1A tournament — Middlesex will next take on the Altavista Combined School of Campbell County Friday and will try to demote Altavista’s Colonels (20-4, 13-0) in the quarter-finals of the state tournament.

Altavista is referred to as a combined school, rather than a high school, because it has both middle- and high school-level grades under the same roof.

Friday’s Middlesex-Altavista game is being played at Heritage High School at 3101 Wards Ferry Road in Lynchburg. Tipoff is set for 5:30…
