Hartfield’s Cody Carnes, a sophomore studying Mathematical Economics on an academic scholarship at Hampden-Sydney College near Farmville, broke a Tigers swimming record this month in the men’s 100 butterfly.
Carnes swam competitively in the past, but took time off after his first semester in high school to focus on his grades to prepare for college.
In the end of September 2022, he walked into the athletic center during practice and was accepted as a walk-on for the Hampden-Sydney swim team. He’s worked incredibly hard for the past four months to get back in shape while juggling honors classes at school.
