The first portion of the Urbanna Historical Water Trail will go online this spring on the Middle Peninsula portion of the Virginia Water Trails website and is the first of its kind in the county.

The trail takes in Urbanna Creek from the mouth of the creek to the Beryl Newman Memorial Bridge and has 28 locations for boaters to view and learn about historical sites on land and water.

Mathews and Gloucester counties both have extensive water trails on the Virginia site. The Urbanna Creek site is the first of three trails planned for the Urbanna/Saluda/Bethpage Camp-Resort areas. The first trail will open in the spring and is designed for intermediate kayakers.

The plan is for the trail to eventually extend to the upper reaches of Urbanna Creek where a beginner trail will be created near Oaks Landing with the intent to tie in the Saluda area…
