New Urbanna community swimming pool opening may hit snag

The targeted opening date of Memorial Day for the proposed Urbanna community swimming pool is in question.

May 29 is 15 weeks away and construction has not started.

Barbara Hartley, who serves as chairman of the pool committee, reported to the Urbanna Town Council at its Jan. 26 regular semimonthly meeting that “the builder still believes the pool could be ready for opening on Memorial Day or soon afterwards.”

Three permits are needed including a ground disturbance permit, Hartley reported. “There’s a little bit of disagreement between the builder and planners as to whether or not the DEQ (Department of Environmental Quality) might hold us up. Our builder is telling us there’s no reason that should happen,” said Hartley. However she added the architect thinks DEQ will be involved in the permitting process. “So that remains to be seen,” she said.
