School officials discuss buying metal detectors

At a special called meeting on Monday, the Middlesex County School Board discussed the purchase of eight metal detectors for the county’s three school facilities.

The discussion of metal detectors comes on the heals of a recent shooting of a Newport News first grade teacher in the school by her 6-year-old student and alleged racial threats towards Black students at St. Clare Walker Middle School on social media two weeks ago. That matter is still under investigation by the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office.

School superintendent Dr. Traci Seitz reported that she had received a quote of $47,600 to purchase eight, which includes the machines, shipping, setup and staff training She also said that each machine requires six trained members of staff to work and monitor the metal detectors, which is going to be challenging for staff.

School board member Claudia Soucek said that the first thing the school board needs to do is “explore a policy” and for school officials to get a “sense” of where funding is going to come from…
