The Middlesex County School Board observed an extended moment of silence at its board meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 10, for Abigail (Abby) Zwerner, 25, the first grade teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News who was shot on Friday, Jan. 6, by one of her first grade students.
Dr. Tracy Seitz said in a telephone interview Tuesday that Zwerner’s twin sister Hannah Zwerner is a teacher at Middlesex High School and they attended the West Point Public School system. “We need to pray for everyone involved in this matter,” said Seitz. “This is a tragedy that touches the hearts and souls of everyone in school systems everywhere.”
The first grader pointed the gun at Abby Zwerner and shot her in the hand. The bullet traveled through her hand into her upper chest. She was still able to get all of her students out of the classroom and has been listed in stable condition, said Newport News police.
