Chargers earn county bragging rights in closer contest than score suggests
Middlesex High School’s (MHS) varsity basketball team (8-2, 5-0) defeated the Christchurch School (CCS) Seahorses (3-6, 0-0) Saturday, 52-42, in a closer contest than the score might indicate.
For the Chargers, Montrell Oakley and Mike Hammond had 14 points apiece in the CCS Yarbrough Gymnasium matchup. Hammond did a stellar job of standing in for MHS point guard starter Ichi Layne, who was sidelined because of a sprained ankle in the Charles City game on Jan. 6.
Christchurch was also shorthanded — several Seahorse players were unavailable because they had not arrived back to school from Christmas break.
Nevertheless, both teams put on a show as the Chargers were never behind in the game but it was not until a couple of minutes left in the contest that Christchurch was not threatening a come-from-behind win.
The Seahorses were paced by Bishop Saunders who scored 15 points and Chris Magero with 10 points. DJ Ogoemeka standing at 7-feet tall scored 6 points and throughout the game brought cheers from Seahorse fans with numerous colorful blocked shots…
