Church Briefs: January 12, 2023

Rev. Dr. Rodney D. Waller

Angel Visit Baptist Church will host the 34th annual Essex County Community Celebration of the Life and Work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. at 29566 Tidewater Trail, Dunnsville. The theme of the celebration is “Remember and Respond.”

Dr. Carla E. Lightfoot, pastor of Angel Visit, said “Yearly we remember the works of Dr. King, set aside this day, and celebrate. The real question becomes, how do we respond? As we remember, let us not only hear, but let us do. In the book of James 1:22-25, we learn that if we only hear and do nothing, then we deceive ourselves. … But the doer of the work is blessed in what he does. As Dr. King dedicated his life to confronting injustices, we must continue that work knowing we may not be able to do everything, but we can do something. Do not let the dream just be about remembering the past, but let it propel us to action today. Let us be doers and ensure his legacy lives on, let us be doers and meet the challenges that remain, let us be doers and keep pressing forward until equality is a realization for all mankind. The best way we can commemorate this day is to Remember and Respond!”

The community is invited to take part in this celebration. The Rev. Dr. Rodney D. Waller, a Lancaster County native who is pastor of First African Baptist Church in Richmond, will be the preacher for the occasion. Music will be provided by the Southside Rappahannock Baptist Association Choir under the direction of Marcellus Dungee.

There is the opportunity to join this celebration in person, by video conference, or by telephone dial-in. Masks will be required for those attending in person.
