From staff reports –

A Saluda man was shot and killed by law enforcement officers after he shot and wounded a deputy in Amelia County, reported Corinne Geller, public relations director for the Virginia State Police (VSP).

According to news releases from the Virginia State Police, at approximately 6:08 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2022, an Amelia County Sheriff’s deputy was called to a residence in the 13500 block of West Lane in Amelia to conduct a welfare check on a male subject. The man was identified as Nicholas S. Lassiter, 32, of Saluda, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch and multiple other news media outlets.

Following up on the information provided in that 911 call, the deputy confirmed the male was also wanted on a felony arrest warrant and two misdemeanor warrants in another county. (Court records indicate Lassiter failed to appear in Richmond County court in January 2022 for a driving while intoxicated [DWI] charge.)

Two Virginia State Police troopers responded to assist the deputy.

As the deputy and troopers made entry into the residence, they encountered Lassiter inside. Lassiter fired his gun at the deputy and troopers. The deputy, who was struck in the gunfire exchange, and one trooper returned fire striking Lassiter.

The injured deputy was treated and released at a hospital.

Lassiter died at the scene. His body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for examination and autopsy…
