MHS will travel to Christchurch School (CCS) on Saturday, Jan. 7, to take on the Seahorses in CCS’s Yarbrough Gymnasium in a special intra-county basketball matchup. Christchurch’s record is 3-3 overall and 0-0 in the 12th VISAA Division II, according to the MaxPreps.com website.
Also at Christchurch, the MHS varsity girls team will play the Lady Seahorses at 2:30 p.m. (The varsity boys game’s tip-off is set for 4 p.m.)
Before the Christmas break, the Middlesex High School (MHS) varsity boys basketball team (6-2, 3-0) had two wins
The Chargers defeated King & Queen (K&Q), 93-40, and Northumberland, 74-55.
Against the K&Q Central Royal Tigers on Dec. 16 in Tidewater District action, MHS had five players in double figures as Ichi Layne led all Charger scorers with 18 points. JaQuan Griffin and Montrell Oakley had 15 points each; Cameron Lambert, 12 points; and Jayden Kidd, 11 points.
Peyton Lambert contributed 9 points to the win; Geion Reed, 8; Dylan Akers, 4; and Cameron Bunns had one point.
Against the Northumberland Indians, Middlesex won the non-conference game and it was the second time this season MHS has defeated the Indians.
The Chargers jumped to a 23-10 lead in the first quarter but the Indians came back in the second and third quarters winning both quarters, 20-15 and 21-17.
In the final quarter the Chargers put on a defensive and offensive clinic as MHS held the Indians to just 4 points and scored 19 points in the quarter for a decisive win.
The highlight of the game came at the buzzer right before half-time when Mike Hammond scored a 3-pointer, hitting nothing but net from behind the half-court line.
The score sheet was not made available for individual scoring from this game.
