MC hearing set on car tax rebate

by Larry Chowning –

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) voted on Tuesday, Dec. 6, to have the county attorney create an ordinance that will provide a 25% refund on qualifying vehicles that have been assessed by the county for personal property taxes for the calendar year 2022.

The board had already agreed to extend the tax due date on personal property taxes on vehicles by 60 days, which pushes the due date for payment to Monday, Feb. 6, 2023. The proposed ordinance states that taxpayers must pay their personal property tax bill by Feb. 6, 2023 to receive the refund.

Due to unusual economic conditions — somewhat due to COVID-19 — there has been an enormous demand for new and used cars that has driven prices of vehicles to unforeseen levels.

Every county and town in the state has been faced with skyrocketing tax bills on vehicles and the public has been in an uproar. Middlesex based its budget on a proposed $700,000 increase coming from personal property but instead it came in at $1.8 million above what was anticipated.

The board cannot vote on the ordinance until after a public hearing, which is set for 7 p.m. Jan. 3, 2023 at the Middlesex County Historic Courthouse…
