by Don Richeson –
Cameron Stearns, 19, of Mathews, rocketed to a first place finish Saturday morning in Hartfield’s eighth annual Jingle Bell 5K. It was Stearns’ fourth straight victory in the race and he finished an amazing five minutes ahead of the second place winner. Stearns’ time in the 3.1-mile race was 16 minutes and 27 seconds. Stearns is currently a student at George Mason University in Fairfax and he said he returned just to participate in the race and keep his title. He improved over his time last year by about two minutes.
Katrina Borden, 35, of Edgewater, Md., was the fastest female in the race, finishing in 21:47.8. She also won last year. Her parents are Bob and Ingrid Borden of Hartfield. She improved over her time last year by about two minutes.
About 200 people — the maximum organizers allowed — participated in the Middlesex Family YMCA-benefit race (or the fun run just before it), both of which were at Piankatank River Golf Course. Many wore fake reindeer antlers, Santa caps or other Christmas-themed costumes and characters portraying St. Nick, Frosty the Snowman and the Grinch mingled with participants.
