Joe Selby Downes Sr. passed away peacefully on Friday, Nov. 11, 2022, with his wife, Elizabeth, at his side.
Joe was born and raised on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. He never forgot his Eastern Shore roots, his childhood friends there, his love of boating and the Chesapeake Bay.
After completing his education at Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Business and Accounting, he went on to successful teaching and coaching positions at Thomas Dale High School. Always a fan of boats and the boating life, he later moved to Deltaville, where he owned and operated Porpoise Cove Marina, which he found fulfilling and made new friendships.
During his retirement, he traveled on his boat, the Take Five, and eventually traveled to all 50 states and many countries. He often commented that he had a wonderful childhood and a lucky life.
Joe had a quiet, thoughtful nature interspersed with moments of great enthusiasm. Joe was a devoted father, husband, friend and mentor. His influence on all will not be forgotten.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his children and their spouses, Joe Jr. and Gina, Liz and Jonni, Jill; granddaughters, Amanda and Virginia; and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by cousins, Julie, Jim and Brett.
A service is planned for 11 a.m. Dec. 13 in Eastville on the Eastern Shore at Christ Episcopal Church.
