Alert Hartfield motorist warns driver his truck’s on fire

by Tom Chillemi –

Driving west on Nov. 22 on a cloudless Tuesday afternoon, Kenny McMullan saw orange flames flickering under the pick-up truck in front of him as they headed towards Hartfield on General Puller Highway (Route 33).

The driver didn’t know his truck, that he’d just filled with 40 gallons of gasoline, was on fire, McMullan recalled. “It took me about a half a mile of blowing my horn to pull him over,” said McMullan of Topping.

The “Dually” heavy-duty truck rides high above the road. “I could clearly see the flames because the truck was up off the ground as opposed to a car.”

McMullan never got the name of the driver, but helped him unload the truck bed while an inferno raged feet from them. “We got his tools out while it was almost fully involved, said McMullan.

The fire started under the hood but soon spread to the cab. Burning tires exploded when super-heated air in them expanded. “The blaze was pretty impressive,” said McMullan.

The Hartfield Volunteer Fire Department and the Middlesex County Rescue Squad responded. No one was injured, said McMullan.
