The Urbanna Town Council, in a split vote on Nov. 17, voted to withdraw $500,000 from the C. Wellington Taber Fund to finance a new community swimming pool, with the intention of repaying the money.
The motion was to “accept the pool committee recommendation” to pay for the town pool by withdrawing $500,000 from the Taber Fund and financing the rest as recommended and repaying the Taber Fund by reinvesting the interest back into the Taber Fund.
Councilor Steve Hollberg was the only vote against the motion to withdraw from the Taber Fund. Voting in favor were councilors Marjorie Austin, Larry Chowning, Merri Hanson, Bill Goldsmith, Bill Smith and Mayor Barbara Hartley.
On Oct. 13, with financing still in question, council voted unanimously to authorize the town staff to enter a pool construction contract, subject to review and approval by the town attorney. The pool contract has been signed, said Mayor Hartley…
