Austin, Chowning, Courtney, Hanson, Justice Stewart and Sturgill capture council seats
William T. “Bill” Goldsmith won Urbanna’s three-way mayoral race Tuesday, defeating incumbent Barbara M. Hartley and Steven Hollberg. According to unofficial results from the Virginia Department of Elections website, Goldsmith received 115 votes (42%), Hartley 94 votes (34%) and Hollberg 64 votes (23%). Goldsmith, who is currently on the Urbanna Town Council, begins his four-year term as mayor starting in January 2023.

n the council race, which featured seven candidates vying for six seats, the winners were Larry S. Chowning, 231 votes (20%); Beth Justice Stewart, 174 (15%); Merri Hanson, 160 (14%); Alana V. Courtney, 153 (13%); Marjorie F. Austin, 151 (13%); and Sandra W. Sturgill, 129 (11%). P. Gari Lister received the least votes, 116 (10%) and will not join the council. The top three vote getters receive four-year terms; the next three receive two-year terms. All council terms begin January 2023.
