All four Middlesex County fire departments responded to a 10 a.m. Monday house fire at the home of Barbara Cockrell at Christchurch.

Middlesex (Urbanna) Volunteer Fire Department (MVFD) Chief Ray Burch said that it appears the fire started in an upstairs bathroom lamp fixture and “quickly” spread through the rest of the upstairs.

Cockrell was able to save photos and other priceless items. “My son says that we did not lose everything inside the house. It’s bad! But it could have been worse!” she added.

The Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad also responded to the fire. At the scene, Cockrell received a phone call from an American Red Cross representative asking what they could do to assist her.
