Sewer in Middlesex has been discussed for years and now construction of a wastewater collection system is about to begin at Cooks Corner.
Pipes and concrete casing that will be buried on both sides of General Puller Highway (Route 33) have now been assembled near the former Rappahannock Central Elementary School site.
These pipes will collect wastewater and send it to a main line on General Puller Highway that Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) plans to build. The county’s share of the Cooks Corner project is $2.6 million. It is due to be completed by July 2023.
This will be the first collection system built as part of Middlesex County’s plan for a sewer system that mostly follows the 42 miles of water lines installed by the Middlesex Water Authority recently.
The collection system will extend from just east of the Cooks Corner Office Complex parking lot for proposed future development of the property behind the building.
Main line
The main line is slated to be online in 2024 at which time the Urbanna and Saluda wastewater treatment plants will be taken off line and there will no longer be treated wastewater discharged into Urbanna Creek. The HRSD main line costs are estimated at $31 million, states a January 2020 report to the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors. HRSD’s costs will be repaid by customers.
Middlesex officials have said repeatedly that connecting to sewer lines will not be mandatory.
