MIDDLESEX CHARGERS FALTER IN TIDEWATER TEST

Chargers dominate first quarter, then shut down for rest of homecoming

The Middlesex High School (MHS) Charger varsity football team (2-4, 0-1) lost its first Tidewater District game to the West Point Pointers, 43-7, Friday night at the MHS homecoming.

On the Chargers first set of downs and with 8:05 left in the first quarter, Middlesex’s Jayden Kidd found an opening in the Pointer defensive line and rushed for 70 yards for an MHS touchdown. Middlesex’s Lane Glasco made good on the extra point kick to give the Chargers their only scores of the game.

After that, West Point dominated. In the first quarter with 2:15 left, the Pointers scored on a 25-yard run from scrimmage and made good on a 2-point conversion to make the score 8-7.

With 10:44 on the clock in the second quarter, West Point scored on a 55-yard run from scrimmage and with the extra point kick good raised the score to 15-7. The half ended with the Pointers up by one touchdown.

At the start of the second half, West Point scored on a three-yard run and hit the extra point to make the score 22-7. With 3:08 left in the third quarter, the Pointers scored again on a 25-yard pass.The extra point made the score 29-7.

In the fourth quarter with 5:04 left in the game, the Pointers scored again making the score 36-7 and near the end of the game West Point blocked a Charger kick in the end zone and recovered the ball for another touchdown. The score ended 43-7, moving the Pointers to 5-2, 0-0.

The Chargers will travel to Charles City Friday night Oct. 14 to take on the Panthers in a Tidewater District matchup. Charles City (0-4, 0-0) is still in search of its first win of the season, according to the maxpreps.com website.
