Turnovers in red zone doom MHS grid squad

Middlesex High School’s Malik Dandy (#30) and Cameron Bunns (#50) move in to decisively slam the brakes on Lancaster’s Jacquarrias Morris (#21) during Sept. 16 grid action in Lancaster. The Chargers will have to eschew turnovers to escape getting scalped by Northumberland’s Indians Friday — they were blanked by Rappahannock in their most recent outing after making four turnovers in the red zone (the Charger quarterback threw three interceptions and there was a fumble). “You can’t win with four turnovers in the red zone,” noted MHS Coach Mark Bowen. The Middlesex High School (MHS) football team (2-3, 0-2) had four turnovers in the red zone that aided the Rappahannock Raiders (2-3, 0-1) to a 33-0 win over the Chargers Friday at Warsaw.

“We had three interceptions in the red zone and a fumble at the one-yard line for a touchback,” said MHS Head Coach Mark Bowen. “You can’t win with four turnovers in the red zone.”

The Chargers were paced on offense by Jayden Kidd who had 68 rushing yards on 16 carries. Kidd returned this week after missing the Lancaster game last week due to injury.

MHS fullback Cameron Byers continued Friday to drag offensive linemen around on short yard runs. He rushed for 44 yards on six carries and David Seay had 16 yards on four carries.

MHS Charger quarterback Cameron Lambert completed a pass to JaQuan Griffin for the one Charger completion in the game. Griffin made the catch for five yards. Lambert had three pass interceptions.

The Chargers will travel to Northumberland (3-1, 1-0) to take on the Indians on Friday, Sept. 30. Northumberland’s only loss so far this year was at the hands of Tidewater District foe King and Queen Central Royal Tigers who crushed the Indians, 44-0 two weeks ago. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
