The coaches of Middlesex High School’s (MHS) boys and girls cross country teams are mostly upbeat about how their runners will do this season.

Girls cross country team

In action at the Chargers first “home” meet of the season last week on the Glenns campus of Rappahannock Community College (RCC), the Middlesex girls finished behind winner Mathews and runner-up Lancaster. MHS freshman Makayla Moore was the first Charger girl to cross the finish line; however, she ran the race as practice and so her time did not count in official race standings. “She will be competing in the next race, though,” Coach Harrow said.

MHS junior Sophia Koontz finished the race ninth with a 32 minute, 18 second time, while her sister, MHS freshman Elsie Koontz, finished 14th (35:57) and their teammate, junior Autumn Jackson finished 16th (36:56).

Harrow is entering her ninth year coaching MHS girls cross country.

Boys cross country team

In the Sept. 7 home meet, Mathews finished first, Lancaster second, Middlesex third, and Essex fourth. “We have had three runners in the first 15 places in each of our first two races,” Coach Gregory said. “Our top three finishers from Wednesday were Gunnar Marston (21:18) followed by Vicente Reyes, and Erik Graulich.

Both the Middlesex boys and girls cross country teams will next participate in a second home meet — again on the RCC Glenns campus — set for 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21.
