An Urbanna man died after an oncoming train struck the car he was driving last week.
The man, George H. Haupt Jr., 76, drove around a closed railroad crossing gate as warning signals flashed, according to a Virginia State Police (VSP) news release. A westbound Amtrak passenger train then struck the 2008 Lexus ES350 Haupt was driving. The collision occurred at 5:02 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7 on Roxbury Road in Charles City County, about a quarter-mile south of Barnetts Road. Charles City County is southwest of Shacklefords and southeast of Richmond.
Haupt, who died at the scene, was wearing a seatbelt.
