Middlesex County schools to get metal detectors

Middlesex Moose Lodge 2401 recently made a donation to the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office. The funds will be used for school security, including the purchase of metal detectors to detect students and others bringing in guns and knives, according to Middlesex Sheriff David Bushey. Deputies receive tips on how to better defend schools

The Middlesex County School Board (MCSB) agreed Monday night at the board’s regular monthly school board meeting to ban backpacks and large totes from athletic events and to install metal detectors in each school.

The ban comes on the heels of a nationwide concern over mass shootings in schools and at other crowded events.

School superintendent Dr. Tracy Seitz said at the meeting that diaper bags will be allowed at athletic events.

Metal detectors

In a related matter, Dr. Seitz informed the board that the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office has purchased three metal detectors — one for MHS, one for St. Clare Walker Middle School and one for Middlesex Elementary School.

“A metal detector will be placed in each school,” she said. “It will not be used daily, but will be used when deputies are available and at heightened activities within the schools.”
