The Urbanna Planning Commission unanimously recommended the Urbanna Town Council approve a Special Use Permit (SUP) to allow a residence on a small parcel south of The Residences at Oyster Harbor Condominiums. The action took place following a public hearing at its special meeting on Aug. 31. As part of the town council’s regular monthly meeting, a public hearing to consider the application is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, in the new Urbanna Town Hall at 390 Virginia St., Suite B.

The parcel at issue is the former Texaco Oil Dock that existed before Urbanna enacted zoning in 1972. Gasoline and fuel oil were offloaded from tanker barges at this site. The facility was built about 1908, said Lewis Hall, representing his family who applied for the SUP under the name Oyster Road Docks, LLC.

History

Lewis Hall’s father worked at the Texaco Oil Dock starting in 1960 and bought the parcel in the late 1970s when the fuel tanks were removed, Hall said. The business was sold in 1981.

The 2016 fire at Dozier’s Port Urbanna Marina next door also damaged the warehouse on the Hall’s parcel, said Hall. It could have legally been rebuilt, but it was demolished.

If the town council approves the SUP, only one residence can be built on the site…
