The Middlesex High School (MHS) Charger football team opens its season Friday, Aug. 26, against Tidewater District foe Charles City Panthers in a 7 p.m. Bristow/Boxley Field match-up at the Syd Thrift Athletic Complex on the MHS campus.

The Chargers have a new coaching staff as Mark Bowen is the new head coach and Sam Nussman and Mac McMurtrie are assistant coaches.

The Chargers have 32 players on the roster and some strong offensive and defensive talent returning from last year.

The Chargers were supposed to open the regular season against the Mathews Blue Devils. However, Blue Devils Athletic Director Josh Grein announced last week that due to lack of players the Blue Devils will not field a team this season.

“We searched every avenue possible to find a path for a healthy season but ultimately our numbers were not there,” said Grein in a statement on Facebook.

Since the beginning of the Tidewater District, Mathews and Middlesex have been arch rivals. With Mathews gone, the district will include Middlesex, Charles City, King and Queen Central, King William and West Point high schools.
