Supervisors fear delays on sheriff’s office move

The proposal to move the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) headquarters from Saluda to Cooks Corner is moving forward. The plan involves spending $3.75 million to renovate the currently vacant 40-year-old former Lewis B. Puller Vocational Center building.

At the Aug. 2 Middlesex County Board of Supervisors regular monthly meeting, supervisors scheduled a 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, work session on the matter. The work session will include a discussion with Bay Design engineer Ben Burton and the county’s newly hired engineer Charlie Beam and will be at the Middlesex County Historic Courthouse.

When it was suggested that it might take as long as two years before the MCSO could move into the building, supervisors balked at that time-table, encouraging staff and engineers to find a quicker way.

Supervisors have not taken a vote on moving forward with the project, but all indications are that the board wants to renovate the old vocational center building. “What will it take to do it in a year?” asked Supervisors Chairman Lud Kimbrough…
