Report scams to authorities

A jury scam continues to make its way through the state, reported Amanda M. Howie, administrator with the Virginia Association of Commonwealth’s Attorneys (VACA).

The most recent jury scam report comes from Montgomery County, she said in an email this week.

Scammers claiming they are a deputy or prosecuting attorney call and tell the person they are missing jury duty and they are in contempt of court and will need to pay to stay out of jail. This is a false claim.

Police say they will never call or ask for money over the phone. They will also never ask for money to be withdrawn or transferred to any other account, gift card, or credit card.

Police want to let residents know that they do not call or approach anyone threatening to arrest them for non-payment of money. They also state that they will conduct business with an individual in person.

Authorities advise those that receive a jury scam call, or any call demanding money, to hang up, not call the scammer back, and save the number that called. Another key point is to listen for inconsistencies.

Report scams to local law enforcement at the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) by calling 804-758-2779.
