William Davis Grove

William Davis Grove died peacefully at home on Sunday, July 17, 2022.

He was born in 1938 in Richmond to Emily Frances and Thomas Leon Grove, M.D. His parents and two of his three siblings, James Gregg Grove and Thomas Leon Grove Jr. preceded him in death.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Mary Metil Grove; his sister, Frances Grove Gladding; and his nieces and nephews, Laura Andrea Gladding, Sarah Gladding Moskalski, Margaret Lee Gladding, Melanie Ann Stewart, Susannah Leigh Vaughan, Jennifer Beth Sielicki and Thomas A. Grove and all of their children. He also leaves behind many family members from his wife’s side, including Mary’s brother, Andrew Alfred Metil, who consider him as one of their own.

After graduating from Christchurch School in Christchurch, he served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years. He then went on to obtain a Juris Doctor from the University of Richmond, The T.C. Williams School of Law, given on Jan. 29, 1972, and was admitted by the Supreme Court of Virginia to practice law. He worked for many years in the banking industry, including VNB Mortgage, serving as vice president and/or general counsel. He then worked with Jay Tronfeld & Associates.

Although they enjoyed their work, Bill and Mary made a special effort to relax during the weekends. They especially enjoyed spending time in their cottage on the Chesapeake Bay during the weekends, boating, fishing, crabbing and just relaxing with friends. They also took every opportunity to take wonderful trips to many of the Caribbean islands, Europe and Mexico.

Bill and Mary then retired and moved at the end of 1999 to Siesta Key, Sarasota, Fla. Bill was a particular enthusiast of the game of golf; it was not unusual for him to play two rounds of golf in a day. Bill and Mary also took many opportunities to visit family in Switzerland and Austria, as well as to visit other countries.

Bill was fun-loving and truly loved people. He had many hobbies and interests. He would try almost anything at least once. All shall miss him dearly.

A service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at the family plot at Christ Church Parish Episcopal, with a small celebration of his life thereafter.
