Gertrude “Gertie” Louise Mantell Leasure, 90, of Warner, transitioned to Heaven on the morning of Monday, June 20, 2022, surrounded by family.
Gertrude was born in Baltimore, Md. on March 27, 1932.
She is predeceased by her parents, Nora Louise Harris Mantell and George “Sonny” Mantell.
Gertrude leaves behind her beloved husband of 73 years, Charles W Leasure Sr. of Warner; and her cherished sons, Charles W Leasure Jr. (Linda) of Warner, and John Leasure (Lisa) of Virginia Beach. She is also survived by two grandsons, Benjamin Shane Leasure of Newport News, and Jeb Stuart Leasure of Gloucester; and her niece, Sharon L. Howlett (Ronald) of Saluda.
Gertrude held a special place in her heart for Urbanna, where lived in her early years. After moving to Warner with her husband, a fire consumed the family home. All that remained was a singed Bible, which she kept as a reminder of God’s faithfulness. Her husband Charles built the couple a new home in Warner, where she lived the rest of her life.
She was also a breast cancer survivor, who knew the hardship of adversity and the triumph of redemption.
Gertrude was a longtime member of Forest Chapel United Methodist Church of Saluda. She was also a dedicated wife and mother. In her earlier years, Gertrude was an accomplished Avon sales representative, earning several prestigious sales awards.
And, in her later years, Gertrude enjoyed spending her days with her much loved dog, Stella, and the joy of laughter, and visits with family and friends. She held a deep appreciation for animals and the kindness shown to her by others. She was especially grateful to Julie Sapp for her readiness to help and her endless kindness. Gertrude was also very thankful for the compassionate care she received in her final days from the Riverside Walter Reed Hospice team, and from Jeri and Raquel, who she knew for a short time, but who were a joy to her.
Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside memorial service for Gertrude planned for 1 p.m. Sunday, July 31 at Forest Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery located at 316 Forest Chapel Road in Saluda. In lieu of flowers or gifts, Gertrude requested that memorial donations would be made to Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, P.O. Box 385, Gloucester, VA 23061.
