The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (UUFR) Church of the Rappahannock in White Stone this week announced its 2022 Servetus Endowment Scholarships for area high schools. A Middlesex High School graduate — Kendall Lucas — is among the recipients. Kendall plans to study Biochemistry at Eastern Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., and become a biomedical researcher.
Other recipients include Chyra Boyd of Lancaster, who will attend North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University to pursue her goal of becoming a criminology investigator; Desiree Dixon of Mathews, who will attend George Mason University and study Computer Science; and Trey Vanlandingham, who will attend Virginia Tech to pursue a career in real estate and residential design.
A May 28 luncheon was presented in their honor at the Tides Inn.
Each student receives a $4,000 scholarship for his or her first year. Unitarian Universalist Fellowship stays in touch with the students as they progress toward their goals.
“Completing all the steps to success is not without challenges, said Trustee Celane Roden. “We hope to be able to help with those challenges where we can.”
The Servetus Endowment Fund was established with the help of the Dr. Pirkko Graves, a psychoanalyst with Johns Hopkins University, and Dr. I.R. (Larry) Graves, a noted microbiologist-virologist, also with Johns Hopkins. The late Graveses retired in 1990 to the Cherry Point area near White Stone.
UUFR meets Sundays at 10:30 a.m. at their “screwpile” lighthouse style church at 366 James Wharf Road in White Stone.

Saluda Baptist Church is presenting a free screening of the movie “Heavenly Deposit.” The screening is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 24, at the church, which is located at 960 General Puller Highway in Saluda.
After losing his father at a young age, Peter Ranos, a character in the movie, denies the presence of God in his life. As the years go by and devastating problems, financial failure, unemployment and marital challenges occur, Peter knows he has to make a change.
He can no longer deny the power of God. All he has to do is accept God’s love and forgiveness, but can he?
Join the movie-time crew at Saluda Baptist to find the answer. Bring the whole family and enjoy some of Saluda Baptist’s free pizza, popcorn and drinks.
