MIDDLESEX’s GREEN GOES FAR IN STATE TENNIS COMPETITION

After cruising undefeated through the regular season with a 16-0 record, Middlesex High School (MHS) junior Madison “Maddie” Green advanced farther in state play than most other MHS spring sports athlete this year, advancing to the Class 1 state girls tennis singles semifinals on Friday, June 10. However, despite the long trek over the Blue Ridge Mountains to Virginia Tech’s Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in pursuit of a state title, it was not meant to be. Green fell 6-0, 6-1 to George Wythe High School’s Maggie Minton, the eventual state title winner. “She ended up losing to a very strong opponent,” MHS Tennis Coach Matt Short said of Green, the Region A champion.

The Charger girls tennis team finished the regular season as Tidewater District champions with a 10-1 record, falling in the state quarterfinals to Riverheads on June 3. Auburn High School won the Class 1 state girls tennis team title Saturday…
