Charger girls No. 1 singles player Maddie Green to play in state individual singles championship tourney at Virginia Tech

Middlesex High School’s (MHS) girls tennis team, runners-up in Region 1A, traveled to the team state quarterfinals to play Riverheads High School, Region 1B Champions, on Friday, June 3, at Mary Baldwin University in Staunton.
“The match was close from start to finish,” MHS Tennis Coach Matt Short said. “After the singles matches were finished, the score was Middlesex 3, Riverheads 3. We needed at least two more wins to win the match. In No. 1 doubles, the (MHS) team of Maddie Green-Virginia Reinhardt got edged out in the first set, but battled back in the second, winning that set and forcing the match to go to a third set.”
Coach Short continued, “At the same time, the No. 2 doubles team of Hailey Bruce and Addy Heasley lost in straight sets. There were a lot of long rallies with great shots, but the majority of the points went to their opponents.
“The No. 3 doubles team of Meeha Ferris and Zikirah Morris were battling on their court.
Wednesday, June 1, tennis play
