The race for the position of Urbanna mayor is on.
Last week current Urbanna Mayor Barbara M. Hartley filed to run for mayor in the Nov. 8 general election, reported Melissa Welch, director of Elections and general registrar for Middlesex County. Mayor Hartley is being challenged by current council member William T. “Bill” Goldsmith, who also has filed to run for mayor. The mayor’s term will be for four years and begin Jan. 1, 2023.
Also last week, Merri Hanson filed to run for a seat on the six-member Urbanna Town Council. Hanson is seeking a second term. Incumbent Councilor Marjorie Austin filed earlier and is seeking another term.
The Urbanna Town Council was granted a charter change by the Virginia General Assembly this year which increased terms from two to four years. The charter also approved staggered terms with three council members running every two years…
