The Virginia Oyster Shell Recycling Program (VOSRP) has installed an oyster shell recycling collection can at the Deltaville Convenience Center at the end of Recycle Drive (Route 660), which is off General Puller Highway (Route 33). Having an oyster roast? Visit #DontChuckThatShuck. Recycle it at the convenience center. Oyster shells that are disposed in the collection can will be used to help in oyster reef reconstruction.
The shell collection can, which is being donated by Ambrose Disposal, will be permanently located at the facility, and will provide a location for residents and volunteers to dispose of oyster shells. These shells will be used by VOSRP to help in oyster reef reconstruction in the Virginia portion of the Chesapeake Bay.
Oysters are aquatic powerhouses filtering water, removing pollutants, building habitat, and protecting shorelines. They are an economic boost for Virginia, creating jobs and generating millions in sales and tax revenues.
Volunteers
Volunteers are a very important part of the VOSRP and, without them, the program would not have been able to bag 75,000 pounds of shell and replenish more than 11 million oysters back into the Chesapeake Bay, said a VOSRP spokesman.
In Deltaville, volunteers from the Middle Peninsula Master Naturalists Chapter will recycle shell from area restaurants like the Deltaville Tap and Raw Bar located at the Deltaville Marina. With the new can at the Deltaville Convenience Center, the public can also be shell recyclers.
