Hardyville residents Leanna Burrell and Robert Burrell, at podium, the two surviving children of Hardyville World War II Army hero Raymond W. Burrell Sr., welcome the several dozen well-wishers who came out Sunday for the unveiling and dedication of the Raymond W. Burrell Sr. Memorial Highway sign.
The sign, which is along Providence Road near Deltaville Market, recognizes the Burrells father, who achieved distinction as a member of the “Black Panthers,” the first tank battalion comprised of African-Americans. The 761st Tank battalion displayed great heroism fighting at the Battle of the Bulge in Europe during WWII. Raymond W. Burrell Sr. was 100 years old when he died in 2019. He had been employed at the Newport News Shipyard and Drydock Company as a sheet metal fabricator until his retirement.
