Proposed jump in taxes on large boats expected to attract speakers

Six citizens attended last week’s Middlesex County Board of Supervisors’ public hearing on the county budget, and no one at the hearing spoke for or against the proposed $30,303,977 budget.
County Administrator Matt Walker announced three times at the Thursday, April 21, hearing, however, that it did not address the real estate tax rate or personal property tax on boats weighing more than five tons. The public hearing on rates is set for 7 p.m. today, Thursday, April 28, in the Middlesex County Historic Courthouse at 865 General Puller Highway in Saluda.
The proposed real estate tax rate is 61 cents on $100 worth of real estate, which will mean a real estate tax jump for most county landowners. The rate is tied to the new county reassessment that jumped real estate values up in the county by about 11%.
The current rate is 62 cents, however, the increased assessment will mean that the proposed reduced 61 cent rate actually equates to a 68 cent rate…
