The opening day of Middlesex County Little League season Saturday marked the 35th year that the Middlesex Little League baseball program has been a part of the official national Little League program.

There was standing room only along the field at the Middlesex County Sports Complex in Locust Hill as 215 girls and boys who have signed up to play in the baseball and softball programs took to the fields.

“This is one of the largest signups we have seen in years,” said Middlesex Little League President William Glenn in an opening ceremony talk. Glenn also said that COVID-19 has kept the league from conducting opening ceremonies for the last two years. “It is good to get back to some normality,” he said.

This year the league honored the late Ken Fuller, a longtime coach in the league who died of cancer in 2020. He coached Glenn when he was a player in the little league program and when the team advanced to regional play.

On Fuller’s behalf, his son, Jesse Fuller, with his infant son, Luca Fuller, in his arms threw out the first pitch and accepted the plaque from the league. The plaque read, “Middlesex County Little League, 2022 Honoree, Ken Fuller, In recognition of your dedication and years of service to Middlesex County Little League; Your devotion to the program is greatly appreciated. Thank you for all your hard work, leadership, and outstanding service. Your commitment to the development of youth athletics in Middlesex County is an inspiration.”
