Margaret Anne Massey, 79, a native of Newport News, passed away on Friday, April 1, 2022 at Emory University Hospital.
Anne was born on May 10, 1942.
She graduated from Warwick High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in Music from Mary Washington College. Anne was a chorus and elementary school teacher, and in the 1970s started the first public school guitar program in the state of Virginia.
A fantastic cook, Anne’s crab cakes were a divine treat when visiting her off the Rappahannock River in Urbanna. She was passionate about music and college sports — especially the University of Virginia. Music was always playing and a game was on TV. She volunteered with the Woman’s Club of Urbanna, her favorite events being the Urbanna Oyster Festival and decorating the town each Christmas. Anne lived young at heart with a fantastic sense of humor and enjoyed doting on her dogs.
After suffering a severe stroke in November 2020, Anne resided at A.G. Rhodes Wesley Woods in Atlanta, Ga. The family is grateful for the care and compassion shown to her, and especially to staff members Patty, Heather, Crystal, Mulu, GiGi, Kay, Georgina and Beryl.
Anne cherished her family and was immensely loved in return. She was extremely proud of her twin daughters and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Ron Massey; daughters, Jennifer Bridges (Walter) and Jacqueline Combahee (Terry); grand-children, Hillary Bridges Barrett (Will), Justin T. Olderman, and W. Patrick Bridges; brother, Owen Thomas Phillips Jr. (Brenda); niece, Kasey Phillips Proffitt; and nephew, Owen Thomas Phillips III and families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Owen Thomas Phillips and Margaret Green Phillips.
A private family service will be conducted at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Anne’s memory to your favorite charity or local pet shelter.
