The burning of socks is a way to celebrate the arrival of spring and the start of the boating season.
Barbara Ehman, left, of Fredericksburg and Liz Via of Urbanna toss socks into a fire as Charlotte Silverman of Morattico watches. They were among the scores who came out Saturday to participate in various forms of sock-burning revelry at Evolution Sails Chesapeake in Deltaville.
As a tribute, Ehman also burned the socks of her mother, a huge boating enthusiast who passed away recently at the age of 96. More photos, page B7.
