MHS tennis team starts strong

Veteran standouts Madison Green, Virginia Reinhardt pace Charger girls

The Middlesex High School (MHS) girls tennis team’s rackets were ablaze Monday, with the Charger girls defeating visiting Essex 8-1. Pacing Middlesex in its home opener were its No. 1 and 2 players, junior Madison Green and senior Virginia Reinhardt, who blanked their Trojan girl singles opponents — each prevailed with an 8-0 score.

Coach Matthew Short, who is entering his 11th year leading Middlesex’s tennis program, is looking to the duo’s experience to help lead the mostly young squad this season. “They’ve been playing for multiple years and can guide our young players on how to improve during practices and matches,” Coach Short said of the pair, which made it to the state doubles semifinals last year.

Other MHS singles winners Monday were Hailey Bruce, 8-1; Addy Heasley, 8-1; and Meeha Farris, 6-1. Zikirah Morris was edged by her Essex opponent, 5-8.

In doubles action, Middlesex’s Green-Reinhardt won, 8-0; as did Bruce-Heasley, 8-2. MHS’s Morris-Farris won by forfeit, because Essex did not have a third doubles…
