The first three phases of the Eastern Middlesex Water System are now in operation, reported Greg Chambers, chairman of the Middlesex Water Authority (MWA).

On Feb. 2  the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) issued approvals for the system’s first three phases, which became officially operational.

Construction of the first three phases took about 14 months. Safe drinking water is now available to customers from the Rosegill wells on Urbanna Road (Route 227), just south of Urbanna, to Grey’s Point Camp on Grey’s Point Road (Route 3) in Topping. “This was a great day for the Middlesex Water Authority and gets us closer to the culmination of many years of hard work in seeing the completion of the remaining project,” said Chambers.

Water customers in these areas can now have their plumbers make connection to the MWA meters that have been installed. The first meter readings were to be at the end of February, with bills going out in mid-March and monthly thereafter. Water fees are $45 per month for the first 3,000 gallons of water use, and $10 for every 1,000 gallons above that.

When completed the entire water system will have 43 miles of water lines and 200 fire hydrants.
