The Lancaster Red Devils won the Region A basketball tournament on Friday, Feb. 25 defeating the Washington & Lee (W&L) Generals, 74-42. Both teams will move forward in the state 1A basketball tournament this week.
The Middlesex Chargers defeat of the Northampton Yellow Jackets, 62-54, in the quarterfinals was an upset and Middlesex’s 61-point showing against the Red Devils was the highest point total against Lancaster in the tournament. The Chargers were the only team in the Region A tournament to put up any defensive resistance against Lancaster (23-1, 10-0).
Lancaster and W&L will play in the Virginia 1A state basketball quarterfinals on Friday and Saturday, March 4 and 5. Lancaster will play at home against Buffalo Gap and W&L will play away against Altavista.
The winners of the games this week will advance to the state semifinals on March 7 and 8. The state finals will be played on March 12. Locations of the games will be determined.
