Celebrate ‘Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope’ this month at the Library

by Alyson Costner-Holt –

As we acknowledge the great work of women during this month, many options will be on display for reflection and learning at the Middlesex County Public Library (MCPL).

First, consider the impact women have made as leaders, in the world of health care, science, and in the arts. In all three of these categories Urbanna and Deltaville library branches offer a wealth of opportunities to learn about women who have made significant contributions. Here are just a few of the available choices:

  • “Eleanor,” by David Michaelis is a new acquisition at MCPL and comes highly recommended. One reviewer states that “this is the perfect biography for our times: the story of a determined woman who willed herself to become a voice for the voiceless, a fighter for freedom, and a tribune for the nobility of America’s true values.”
  • “Reason for Hope: A Spiritual Journey,” is an autobiography of Jane Goodall and tells the story of “a heroine, in a hero-less time.” (Christian Science Monitor). Her work and legacy as well as the tenacity of her life’s work is hard to compare.
  • “Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business,” is an autobiography that will inspire you. Dolly Parton’s current work with literacy and her “Imagination Library” has provided millions of free books for children. In this book, you can learn of her endurance to follow her dreams.
