Urbanna likely to seek federal help to pay for pool

Urbanna may be eligible for grant money to fund the proposed new community swimming pool, Councilor Bill Goldsmith told the Urbanna Town Council at its Feb. 10 meeting.

The grant would pay half of the new pool costs, said Goldsmith. Swimming pools are specifically included among eligible uses for the grant.

Federal money

Goldsmith said the application process requires very specific information, including financing information, time schedule, and “a lot of things that are still in flux.” Also, the grant requires that the project must be ready for construction to begin.

The grant process is an “extended” process in terms of approval and could take six months after the application is submitted.

The town would have three years to complete the pool construction, he added.

Design

The proposed pool will be 25 meters long with six lanes for competition. In addition there is a “splash pad” with a “spray tower” in a shallow area. It has a “zero entry,” which is a gently sloping bottom allowing users to walk into the pool without using a ladder.
The town is working with Richmond-based Douglas Aquatics.

Next meeting

Council is set to meet 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 24, in the new town hall at 390 Virginia St.
